Where to fish?

Turangi, which is my "home" town, is a small town situated at the southern end of Lake Taupo. Tongariro River is the most important and best known of New Zealand's trout rivers. It starts it journey towards Lake Taupo up in the Tongariro National Park with its famous Alpine Crossing.

Tongariro River flows right through Turangi

The Tongariro has lots of wonderful pools, some of them in the middle of Turangi. If you want to be alone, walk a bit or drive into wild countryside.

five or ten kilometres up the river!

The Waitahanui is a fast-flowing gin-clear spring-fed river.
Its spring water is quite cool all the year round and as it is so clear the fish are easily spooked. It is difficult to get the fly down to the bottom in the faster parts.

Lake Taupo is large and deep. And it is beautiful!
