Introduction to the use of articles

What is an article? Are articles really necessary? There are languages, e.g. Russian, that don't use articles. Why do you need to bother with them?

The potatoes taste good.
ø Potatoes usually taste quite good.

Is the meaning really different when you use the?
 

| 2 | The definite article / the indefinite article / no article (ø)

ø Participants usually don't form ø groups without ø hesitation.
The participants formed a group without ø hesitation.
The lack of
ø hesitation was a sign of ø scurity among ø participants.

Think of the as something definite - specific.
Think of a (an) as one out of many things you can count.
Think of ø as something general (often in the plural) or something you can not count.
