What is a verb?


Verbs are words that describe an action or state a fact. Together with nouns (man, table, hope, etc.), verbs make up the basics of a sentence.

bullet Jane (noun) runs (verb) along the beach every day after work
 
A matter of time and circumstance

To state basic facts, you generally use simple verb forms:
 
bullet My son walks (runs, flies, goes by taxi, etc.) to work

To describe an action, you need to be very time specific and you need to be able to provide details:

bullet If I hadn't been busy painting the house, I would have gone to the party yesterday
