Describing things and people
Practise describing an object in six steps. Use a piece of paper an a pen to write your suggested answers before looking at our Example solutions.
Step 1Give Picture 1 a caption (name), which is as short as possible - two words).

Add more 'life' to your caption, using two adjectives.

Make the caption a bit personal, but still very short.

Step 4
You have to describe an apple to someone who doesn't know what it is, and who has never seen or heard of apples. You have no picture to show, so you have to use words only. What is essential?
Can the object be classified? What does it look like? Can it be compared? Where do you find it? What is it used for? What is special about it? Example*
Step 5
Choose another object and try to come up with a description that you can test on your friends. Memorize two-five sentences, and check how many you need to use before your listeners understand what you are trying to describe. Don't mention the name of the object. Here is an example:
- It is made of wood and has been used a a weapon for thousands of years.
- It is usually associated with Australian aborigines.
- If it misses its target, it returns to the thrower
