A long history

English is one out of something like 6,000 different languages around the world. It is closely related to some of the other languages in Europe, e.g. German, Danish, Swedish. It is more distantly related to most of the other languages in Europe too, but not to all of them. On a more distant level it is actually related to many more languages, for it is a member of the Indo-European group of languages.
