How to

Structure

Like all other themes, The English Language is divided into (6) parts, accessible in the menu as | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |. Each part may have a number of text pages, video clips, audio clips, exercises, and tests at one, two, or three levels.

Parts

The (6) parts address the same theme, and you can work with them in any order you choose.

Web structure

Even though there is such a lot  of materials, the structure is quite intuitive and simple. You'll soon get used to the menu system.

Levels

For each one of the (6) parts there is a very short introduction, and then you can choose between one, two, or three levels:

  1. Intermediate -
  2. Intermediate +
  3. Advanced

Dynamic keys

Each text/audio/video has many exercises, tasks, and quizzes. They are sorted as nine dynamic keys, numbered 1-9. Hover your cursor over the key numbers for information. For your convenience the dynamic keys are displayed at the top of every text page.

Vocabulary (dynamic key No 1)

Word explanations are available for most texts. Generally there are more word explanations in the lower level texts. By hovering your cursor over the asterisk (*) of a word, an explanation appears. Try now!  Make sure you use the SaveWord button at the top of every page. The Wordsmyth online dictionary, which you also find as a shortcut button at the top of the page, is very useful.

Grammar (dynamic key No 2)

Texts are not written with specific grammar problems in mind. However, whenever we feel that a text exposes a grammatical problem key No 2 is activated.

Understanding (dynamic keys No 3,4,7)

Themes are generally used to encourage the learner to read in order to collect and use the information provided for communicative purposes. Important words and phrases are highlighted (linked) and explained, and they should be used for further study. For quick check-ups on comprehension and response, there are reading comprehension exercises (dynamic key No 3), clozes (dynamic key No 4), and crosswords (dynamic key No 7).

Action

Learners should not only read to understand and respond, but also to use the information they collect for active communication. To that end, writing (dynamic key No 5) and talking starters (dynamic key No 6) are provided. In order to encourage active learning and learner autonomy, assignment and project suggestions are provided. (key No 8). For that purpose there are usually also one or more Internet links.

And, above all, for the active learner there is a shortcut button to a forum!

Odds and Ends

Key No 9 contains things like games, links, ideas, fun, etc.

Pedagogical approach

All the materials are meant to be used for self-reliant studies, but as this theme is used in classrooms world-wide, we would like to point out that the materials are to be used at the discretion of the teachers and their students.
