<< BACKAutonomy
The word autonomy is of Greek origin. Think of the word automobile, which is something that can 'move by itself'. So the more autonomous the learner is the less instruction she needs.
We regard learner autonomy as an important goal of all kinds of education. Striving for autonomy is not only essential, it makes learning more fun too!
Lifelong learning requires autonomy. You can't expect all your teachers to stay with you all your life, can you?
So the sooner you realize that autonomy ought to be part of your personal goals the better. And the sooner you send such signals to your teacher the better.
Learner autonomy means that you can ...
take responsibility set your goals plan your work stay by the deadlines develop strategies and routines evaluate your working routines assess your progress keep a dialogue going with your teacher (if you're still in school)
