Are there principles and tricks that will increase your vocabulary more quickly?

Just think about this. Statistically you need to get in contact with a new word around 16 times in order to "know" it. So ...

... when you start reading  a book you should work very actively on every new word on the first 25 pages. Why? Every writer has his favourite words, and they will appear many times on the next 226, or so, pages. If you pay attention to them from the beginning, you will probably read them at least 16 times. If you know what they mean from the beginning ...
